Q: Beagle dog?
I have a one year old beagle and he is the best dog ever until we have a guest. Then all he wants to do is jump up on them. My father is handicap and coming for christmas dinner and I am scared he will jump on him. What should I do. My dad loves dogs but no one wants them to jump on them. I guess I could answer my own question I should put him in his cage. But he is a good dog after the new wears off.

A: I think you should keep your dog on it’s leash until it’s calm then you can let your precious little pooch of the leash. I had a hyper golden retriever that hurt my cousin by jumping up. We tried this “technique” with her and now she’s mellow and my cousin isn’t scared anymore : )

Q: Can anyone tell the pros and cons of caring for a beagle dog?
I’m in the process of adopting a young beagle (my nephew is 8 and it seems small enough yet boyish enough for him) but we’ve never owned a dog before.
Any suggestions, tips, etc?

A: I love Beagles, my brother has a pair called Smith & Weson There are beautiful dogs, always happt and very obedient.

The Beagle is full of energy and does great in a family environment. They are very lively, active, and high energy making a wonderful childs companion given the proper socialization. This breed is alert and of even temperament and should never show signs of aggression or timidity. The Beagle can be very mischievous and very bold at times so proper precautions must be taken when training and/or socializing this fun loving breed.
The Beagle is an all around happy dog that makes a wonderful companion for many different families. This breed adapts to many different environments and lifestyles, if not all. The Beagle is very eager to please, and is very intelligent however training must be consistent as this breed tends to lose interest and focus on something that catches his attention. This breed does extremely well with children, and can do exceptionally well with other pets if socialized properly.

Q: How to get a Pug/Beagle dog to stop barking?
I have a 1 year half pug hald beagle dog. He is a great dog in all aspects but lately (past month) he seems to want to bark at everything he sees. Even when there is nothing there is still barks. How do i get him to stop?
And i had a dog trainer for 3 months…this is the one thing bad behavior wise that has remained…

A: Buy a bark collar. Each time the dog barks, it emits a small bit of electrical charge. It doesn’t hurt (I tried it on myself before I put it on my dog) and feels like a pinch. It startles the dog more than anything. This has eliminated unwarranted barking at nothing. I found mine at Amazon.com for about $40. It’s made by PetSafe.

Good luck!

Q: Question about male Beagle dog after being neutered?
We have a fenced in yard for our Beagle, but we have to watch him carefully because he likes to roam the neighborhood and once started a crimewave of stealing the neighbor’s newspapers. We are planning to get him spayed to help correct this; however, he is a very good watch dog and will bay (bark) at anyone or anything who even comes near our property (we live in the country). Will he still be alert like this after he is fixed?

A: YES

Q: Where do I get a Beagle dog in West Va?
My sister’s beagle died a month a go & she wants to get another one. I want to get one for her, but live in a different state & was thinking it would be better to wait until I get there. She had adopted “Petunia” from a dog shelter as an older dog, so she on ly had her for about 4 years. Petunia was a sweetie & my sis really wants another beagle because of their disposition.
Can anyone recommend a place in West Va that I can get a beagle for her when I go to visit.
I ask now, because I will only be there for 5 days & do not want to have to run all over the place trying to locate one when I get there.
Thank you.

A: Definitely contact BREW as mentioned above. They are the best beagle rescue organization on the East Coast.

We worked with BREW (midwest division) to rescue one of our beagles. They were straigthforward, honest, and have a genuine concern about the dogs in their care. They will have great info for you as a potential adoptee. The dogs that are available for adoption are listed on their website and the descriptions go into good detail about the dog’s habits and personalities. This way you can find a beagle that best-matches what you’re after.

We wanted a mellow dog to live indoors with us and our other beagle (rescued locally – not from BREW). They worked with us and we got the best-possible dog for our situation. Both our beagles get along wonderfully together, with other people, and with other dogs…which is exactly what we were after. We are very happy with the situation and it feels even better knowing we saved a couple great little dogs from certain euthanasia.

There are many beagles that need great homes, and most of the BREW beagles are already housetrained and ready to become best friends in forever homes. If you can help a dog who needs a home, please look into BREW before buying a puppy from a pet store or something similar.

Good Luck !

Q: How to tell if a Beagle Dog is Pregnant?
She was found yesturday, her tits are a little big. I have a 6yr old Black Lab and her tits are not as big as the beagles.
We don’t want to spend money to see, with her not being our dog.
Thank You
****= Boobs

A: Your only real way of knowing is to take her to the vet.

Try feeling under her belly for any movement and also along the sides. Depending on how far along she is in the pregnancy, you might feel something.

Q: How Do I Keep My Beagle/Dog HAPPY And HEALTHY ?
I have a 8 year old beagle. He’s healthy and happy. But, i find during the day he gets really bored. If you know how to keep a beagle happy and healthy can you help with ideas? Thanks so much! :)

P.s: My dog keeps licking his paws and there’s red areas where he licks, do you know what that is?
…He also has a bit of a ear infection, would that have anything to do with it?

Thanks … again ! :)

A: In general Beagles have very few health problems. But, the ear infection is a concern. If it is a yeast infection then I would suggest a change in diet as a starting point, but not knowing what you are feeding now, any suggestions of what to change to would be foolhardy.
By that I mean which formula, not which brand.

Beagles have about the highest pack instinct of any breed and often do very poorly if they spend very much time alone. For that reason two Beagles usually thrive while one by it’s self suffers.

This is about as far apart as these two ever get from each other

Q: why low sperm count in beagle dog?
4 year old male beagle dog with low sperm count, can this be corrected?

A: First, you shouldn’t rely on one test. Some dogs might test perfectly normal on a subsequent test.

Routine checking of thyroid levels should be done on any dog with a low sperm count.

If this level is low (or on the lower limit of normal), thyroid replacement is necessary and should be commenced as soon as possible.

Once the thyroid level is back in the normal range, wait 6-8 weeks before re-checking the sperm count.

If the sperm counts are still low, then specific hormone treatment may be required. This would apply to those dogs with low sperm counts and normal thyroid levels.

The hormones used to stimulate spermatogenesis are gonadotropins (follicle stimulating hormones FSH), which act indirectly to stimulate sperm production and as a side effect,
also produce natural testosterone which stimulates the libido. These hormones are given for 4-6 weeks and then the semen is re-evaluated. If this fails to sufficiently increase sperm production, the possibility of other hormone imbalances may need to be further investigated.

Injections of testosterone are contra-indicated in fertility problems in the male. Giving injections of testosterone directly to a dog will not stimulate sperm production and, in
excess, can act as a contraceptive by lowering sperm production.

Edit: I also agree with the above poster and don’t breed dogs with thyroid problems since it is hereditary.

Q: My beagle dog makes a snorting sound and doesn’t seem to breathe very well when he does this, for a minute, Y?
Sounds like he is clearing his throat, he looks uncomfortable when doing this. It’s a little like a asthma attack for a human. My other beagle has started to do this too. Please advise what it could be?

A: If you are worried tell your vet about it. I am not a beagle expert BUT I have never actually met a beagle who DOESN’T do that occasionally. Every Beagle I have ever known has done this. So please don’t panic, but make a video recording of it to show your vet on your next visit.

Q: UK Question: Has anyone got a good site or info on buying and training a beagle dog?

Q: would a beagle dog be a good choice?
We are looking for our 1st dog. I love the beagle and medium size. We have 2 active boys a 4yo and 5 yo. We are very active, love to ride bikes, camp, hike and we have a wooded lake-house with a boat. I am worried that the beagle may want to run off, we need a dog that could be off a leash and stay with the family. Could a beagle/mix be trained to stay w/us off a leash?

A: You family sounds like you have an active enough lifestyle to keep a beagle busy. They are hunting dogs so they are intelligent (but stubborn) and high energy. Beagles are ruled by their noses so usually they can’t be trusted off leash. They’ll find a scent and will track it to the ends of the earth and become deaf and blind to everything else even if you’re screaming for it and a car is coming towards it. I have known 1 Beagle that was reliable off leash, but the thing was too old to run off anymore. I haven’t met a single young Beagle that had 100% recall off leash, which is what a dog should have if you’re ever going to let it run free. One of my friends adopted a Beagle and they thought they could trust it off leash until she ran away despite all their screaming and ended up 10 miles away from home still tracking something.

Q: How much would it cost to take care of a female beagle (dog)?
I already know that the local pound is going to charge me about $30 to adopt her but what about vet bills (shots), dog food, and toys?

A: I spend about $100 a month on my dog with the occasional $100-$200 exta a month when she has to go to the vet (once to 3 times a year unless something comes up)

I buy dog food that costs about $50 a 30lbs bag though. Along with buying her a lot of toys.

Also don’t get walmart dog food or any food you can find at any of those places.

Try one of these bands:

Solid Gold
Wellness
Chicken soup or the dog lovers soul(the cheapest)
California Natural
Call Of The Wild

I feed my girl Solid gold. I use to feed her Old roy and there is a HUGE difference in her health!

Q: hi can anyone help me the last 2 months my beagle dog has gone strange?
i have a 2 year old beagle he has gone very strange the last 2 months he has a habit of pushing around his blankets with his claws spends most of the day doing it, he doesnt even notice when we come near him. just ignores us. he does it so much he makes his feet bleed. he does get walked and is a much loved pet please help me.

A: it definitely sounds like an obsessive behavior disorder. get him medical treatment for his paws and then ask your vet while you are there if there is an animal behaviorist that he/she recommends. they can work wonders at getting to the bottom of a problem and helping fix it. good luck

Q: why is my 10 month old beagle dog bitting everything? Is she nervous?
my female dog sandy she bites everything in the house she even bite on my cell phone. Should i take her to the doctor or do something else? but the point is……is she nervous or something for all that bitting?

A: Dogs Are Like That. If Their Biting Thats Perfectly Fine. My Young Dauschound Bites Everything, And She Is A Healthy Energetic Dog. If You Want Something To Keep Her Busy, Buy A Few Chew Toys.
