Q: Im thinking about getting a Beagle but i have other pets?
I want to get a Beagle but i already have other pets. I have 1 rabbbit and a few birds, all of which live outside. Do you think i would be able to keep a beagle with the pets? If not do u have any pther suggestions on breeds?

A: Animal Planet (TV channel) has a new show called Dogs 101. The show looks at 5 or 6 different dog breeds on each show. It gives you the entire low down on each dog breed (both the good and the bad). The first show had Beagles on it. I believe you can watch the episodes at the following link… After watching it you might be able to make a more informed choice on getting a beagle.

Q: Are beagle dogs good house pets?
I’ve been wanting an inside dog forever. Just couldn’t ever find the right breed to get. I’ve had many beagle dogs growing up. And my grandparents have breeded many too. Just looking for a great inside house dog. Any help?

A: I know two people who have Beagles as mainly inside dogs however they need a lot of playtime outside as they can become overweight extremely quickly. If you are not able to give it constant excersize and time outside to sniff around (as beagles need to do to feel stimulated) I would recommend a toy breed such as a Yorkie or a Maltese. Good luck searching! :-)

Q: Got a beagle that gets along with other pets?
Kay, I’ve read that if trained as puppy beagles can get along with cats. One thing though my beagle who is almost 3 has been around other dogs but that’s it. The other day while on a wake she met one of the neighborhood cats and tried to make friends with it. Anyway I plan to get a pet pigeon later on, and wanted to oknow does nyone have a beagle that gets along with other pets?

no jokes please…

A: My beagles love the other dogs in the house but still get territorial over food now and then. Cats never ever worked with any of my 3 Beagles. They freak out at squirrels, people walking by, the smell of a cat that WAS in the yard…Probably a tough breed to have with a cat. Good luck!

Q: Are beagles good pets and do they get along with other dogs?
We are thinking of getting a Beagle puppy. We already have a 7 year old female westie. The new puppy would be female too. Would they get along? Also are they cuddly dogs because I really want a nice snuggly one as well as playful. Are they good pets in general? Are they yappy too?

A: I owned two beagles that eventually went on to a have a HUGE litter of puppies! We enjoyed them so much. I would recommend getting a beagle. They are even tempered, playful, happy, and I have even found them to be snuggly too. Mine was always laying right up against me like a baby!! We never had problems with them being yappy. I would say though, if you can, slowly introduce the new puppy to your dog. Just to make sure they will be ok. Animals are as different as people and sometimes they may not want another animal. If you are getting the new pup from someone who has a litter, ask them if you could bring your dog to help introduce a new puppy.

Q: When’s the best time to toilet-train my pet Beagle? What’s the best way to do it?
My male pet Beagle is almost 2 months old now (on Sept 16 to be exact). Should I start training him soon? How can I best deal with it especially that I have work the whole day and I only have to leave him most of the time with my pet sitter?

A: You should be training your puppy now, keeping in mind that at this age a puppy has no more bladder control than a baby so training him is a matter of catching him at the right time.

Is your pet sitter going to be training this puppy? Or will he be in a crate during the day?

Whoever trains this puppy, what you do is keep him in the same room with you so you can watch him. After a nap, hard playing, a long drink or if he hasn’t been out for a while, take him outside. You need to go out with him and the very second he pees, give him lots and lots of praise and come right back in. This teaches him the difference between play time outside and potty time.

When he makes a mistake, quietly clean it up unless you catch him in the act, then tell him no firmly and take him outside, praise him if he finishes.

Dogs learn very quickly with lots of positive reinforcement, rather than corrections for incorrect behaviour. If you’re watching him you’re not giving him the chance to make a mistake and he’ll learn quickly.

Q: Beagle Owners: do they make good pets?
Im thinking of getting a beagle, but I dont know anyone who has ever had one, and I want to know about their temperment, barking, are they loving? etc.
My last dog was a Lab, smart, effectionate, very obediant…. so Im looking for a smaller version.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

A: Beagles are great dogs, but they are not for everybody
Here is information on the breed that will help you decide whether or not this breed is right for you.

PS: I don’t think that Beagle owners would own Beagles if they didn’t think that they were “good pets”.

Q: How old can a beagle be to leave it outside and also how much do they cost monthly to maintain as pets.?

A: Why would you want a pet to just leave it outside?

Q: does anyone out there own a beagle and a caged animal. How does the beagle react to the caged pet?
Does the beagle just ignore the caged animal or does he always want to get at it…

what i mean by caged like small pets umm birds, bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters… ect.

A: I lived at home for a while with my families two beagles. They were puppies and the hermit crabs were in the same room. They ignored them for the most part. The hermit crabs were more interested in watching the puppies. Where as the puppies ignored them.

Beagles and small mammals are not usually a good mix. Rabbits in particular if they are out with beagles might be a bad mix. Beagles are hunters and even if they have never hunted they will try to kill a small animal if given the chance.

You can keep small animals with beagles just make sure the pets have their own room or can be kept apart from the dogs.

At a pet expo I was at recently there were bunnies and beagles and no incidents. Even considering many of the beagles were rescued hunters they all behaved well.

Q: Do beagle hounds make good pets ?

A: yes i have one right now…her name is mojo…odd yeah i know…but shes great. train her properly and she will bark when she wants to be let out or take a walk…they are great friends and fun to be around. great pets.

Q: what is the best place to buy a beagle in charlotte?
in 5 dys im getting a pet beagle but i dont know where to get the best deal on a beagle is. i need a good breeder or an adoption place in charlotte or close 2 charlotte. this beagle is everything i wanted so plzz any suggetions?

A: Well first off you can’t just decide that in 5 days your dog is going to be there. Many good breeders have waiting list they don’t normally have pups available at all times.

If you are thinking about a rescue try some googleing some rescues groups in that area and see if they have a dog available. Or try www.petfinder.com

For breeders try the beagle club of america:

http://clubs.akc.org/NBC/

They should have a breeder close by. It also helps if you put the state where you live. I am guess NC? However there are probably many Charlotte’s in the US.

Here is a list that will help you pick what traits are good and bad in a breeder. Good luck!

Q: Is it okay to leave my 12 week old beagle in his pet taxie all day as long as i take him out at lunch.?
Our beagle has to stay in his lart pet taxie during the day becase i am afraid to leave him out side by himself. I take him out before i leave for work and then again at lunch. As soon as i get home he gets out. i feel like i am being cruel but i just dont want anything to happen to him.

A: Why not buy a “dog run” ( a large chain link cage.) It’s large enough for a dog house and still has room for it to move around. In summer put something over the top of it to give the dog shade. it will be happier and can “go” when it needs too.

Q: What is the name of your pet?any good name for a pet dog beagle?
if it’s any help, she’s a picky eater, a real trooper and got the usual shade of color for a beagle.
Mel P. I had this question asked for the mere intention of getting ideas of what to name my new pet dog. Its entireky up to the person whether to give out the name of his/her pet name. You don’t have to answer this if you don’t want to. That’s your discretion.

A: Call her Bella and you can put on her Dog Tag: “Bella the Beagle”

My Beagle’s name is Duncan.

Q: Begales – does anyone have one and if so are they good pets?
I am contemplating getting a beagle for a pet – but seeming i don’t know anybody with one – and when you ask the shop assistant they will just say how great they are – i need to know what kind of pet they are like – are they active – are they indoor pets and so on and so forth
Any help would be muchly appreciated
i also have a 5month old boy and need to know if they are good around kids?

A: Have beagles and yes they make great pets. They are very loving and generally like children. They can be rather noisy, so if you are in an apartment they may not be for you. They follow their nose for everything you have to be very careful about them getting out a yard and wandering off. They are best keep inside for this reason. Also because of their nose they will get into any trash or anywhere where this is food left out. So keep the trash up and all food should be in cupboards etc. Beagles are generally as active as you want them to be. If you enjoy going out a lot an walking them most beagle will love to join you. If you enjoy staying inside then they like that too. If you don’t exercise them much that can be fine, you just have to careful on how much you feed them. Beagles love to eat and don’t seem to get full, so have to really limit the food. Beagles are very social dogs so they need to have lots of contact with their owners.

Many shelters have beagles frequently because they are such a popular breed and because the have the tenancy to run away. My advice is to check the shelters first before you go to a breeder (please stay away from the pet stores because their dogs are generally puppy mill dog and thus poorly bred)

I have a 21 month old and I have a beagle and a beagle mix and both are good around my daughter.

Q: My pet beagle eats its own feces. How do I correct this habit?
Is there a good way to combat your 4 month old dog from eating its own feces? She is a great and incredibly smart pup but has been eating its own feces pretty much from the get go. She is kennel trained and we noticed in the beginning the odd time there would be some in her kennel but the majority of it was missing.
The breath is horrendous but worse than that she regurgitates quite frequently. Bile + Feces = Super-YUCK!
I understand there is an additive that you can purchase that deters them from this behavior. If anyone has any experience with these products it would be greatly appreciated!

A: Mother dogs clean their nursing puppies and eat the feces. With pups in the nest, you can imagine the unhealthy situation that would result from the waste being allowed to accumulate.

She is not doing anything that she believes is wrong. She was taught this by her mother, when the mom kept the nest clean. When mom became too overwhelmed to keep clean after all the litter, the pups were good little helpers and did it themselves….They didn’t have gloves and bags, so just did it the way they could. She is just being fastidious. Scolding for it will only confuse her. She will not get the point, and you will have a insecure and traumatized dog…The reason that she leaves part of it, is that it is just too much, but she is doing the best she can to clean her own mess..

Dog’s ancesters have done this for eons, to keep their area clean and to not let predators know where they live. It is as natural for them as hand washing is for people.

The only solution is to consistantly beat her to it. Hopefully she will learn that you can be trused to clean it up so she doesn’t have to…. Meanwhille, there is an additive available at all pet supplies that will make the stuff very bitter.(Forbid) This may help some… Also putting a few pieces of pineapple in her food will do the same..
Note: the ones that do this are usually the easiest to house train, as they are good house keepers

Q: does a beagle-pug make good pets ???
an for what age should the be interduced to kids ?

A: No they don’t. This cross is a particularly bad one because the parent breeds contribute so many debilitating genetic abnormalities (especially considering most people breeding puggles are BYBs or puppy mills who DON’T do genetic testing on their stock beforehand). These dogs are prone to a myriad of health problems throughout their lives. Check out the Pug Dog Club of America http://www.pugs.org and read the articles they have on puggles.
