Q: Pocket Beagles?
I’ve never heard of Pocket Beagles. What are they and how are they?

A: Another name for a bad idea.

Pocket beagles were bred in the 1300’s and 1400’s and were said to be about 9″ at the withers (shoulder). There is no such thing as a modern-day pocket beagle and in fact, the term “pocket beagle” has become synonomous with poor quality puppies bred for the pet market, and often sold to pet shops. Reputable (U.S.) breeders breed according to the Standard defined by the American Kennel Club, which includes two height varieties: not exceeding 13″ at the withers, and not exceeding 15″. The light bones, high ear sets and toyish heads that tend to go along with very small sized beagles are listed as faults.

In addition to not breeding according to the standard, the majority of “pocket beagle” breeders allow many of the common genetic defects (e.g., hip dysplasia and epilepsy) to be passed along. The result is often an unhealthy dog.

If you still want a small beagle, then consider the option of adopting a fully grown adult from a rescue or the pound. Most beagles are fully grown by about 1-1/2 years, and breeders can usually tell by about 8 months if a beagle will remain under 13″.

Q: Does anyone know how much pocket beagles cost?
My boyfriend wants to get me one but doesnt know what they cost. They are the cutest dogs ever. Does anyone know the average cost for a pocket beagle puppy? It has to be a pocket beagle. Not a regular beagle. Please let me know if you do know anything. Thanks.

A: If you buy a “pocket” beagle you will be buying a very poor quality pet. It is probably a runt with stunted growth and all sorts of health problems, which will cost you a fortune in vets bills.

The ONLY people who sell “pocket” or “teacup” breeds are back yard breeders and puppy farms – and the ONLY reason they do it is to con gullible people out of their money!

If you buy one you will be supporting, encouraging and funding poor care, irresponsible breeding and animal abuse. You can also expect to spend a fortune on a sick dog.

Please find a proper breed of dog, eg a normal beagle, from a reputable, responsible breeder. Or better – rescue one of the many already needing homes!

Q: pocket beagles?
I have heard that hunters use to use these dogs a long time ago because of how small they are, they could get into and under the bushes to chase out the rabbits, and that they got their name from the hunter putting them in their saddle bags. what I want to know is Have you ever owned one and was it a good experience or a bad one, was it easy to train or was it stubborn? also I have seen a few for sale and was wondering if they are recognized by AKC, the breeders selling them said they are, so I was wondering if this is true, any other info would be great.

A: There is a small beagle 13′ ! But no pocket beagles. Akc does not honor them.

Q: Why don’t any of the answers regarding Pocket Beagles really address the true nature of the controversy?
It is false that Pocket Beagles “don’t exist”. The Beagle is a recognised AKA breed and has a breed standard of 15″ and 13″ inches. A new breed, the Olde English Pocket Beagle, bred carefully using only purebred Beagles of high quality and diminutive stature with a breed standard of 12″ or below and ideally at “10 is emerging and going through the proper steps to be eventuallly recognized by the AKA. Another new breed, much more carelessly and controversially bred mostly from small Beagles with an outflux of Miniature Dachshund blood, the Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle, which can get extremely small, has also emerged. It is becoming very popular although the breeding process had many flaws and the dogs may be the next “puppy mill” victims, but the best specimens are fantastic dogs and it’s a great shame that more care isn’t being taken with them. Many homeless Beagles crossed with Dachshunds(Doxles) or other small breeds are available to adopt through “Beagle Rescues” or Pet Finders

A: “A new breed, the Olde English Pocket Beagle, bred carefully using only purebred Beagles of high quality and diminutive stature with a breed standard of 12″ or below and ideally at “10 is emerging and going through the proper steps to be eventuallly recognized by the AKA.”

I assume you’re actually talking about AKC (not “AKA”) recognition? When the Standard for 13″ Beagles states “not exceeding 13 inches in height”, and these breedings often produce Beagles 10″ to 13″ (see http://clubs.akc.org/NBC/NBC_FAQs.html#3. ), what is the point of creating another “variety” of smaller Beagle? I doubt this “dream” will come to fruition because these dogs ALREADY exist in form of the 13″ Beagle, and there *is no functional purpose* for a “slightly smaller” Beagle! WHAT IS THE POINT?

“using only purebred Beagles of high quality and diminutive stature”

Highly unlikely that these dogs are of “high quality”, as no breeder of good quality Beagles would contribute to this farce. Breeding only for small size (and marketability) is *not* an acceptable goal for a responsible breeder. Just like any other “market friendly” fad dog, so called “Pocket Beagles” are being created from poorly-bred dogs. Adding the pointless moniker of “Olde English” isn’t going to make them any more legitimate!

tom l, are you around? What’s your take on this?

Q: hi! i want to buy a dog for a big apartment, are pocket beagles a good option?
i will take it regular walks at country side and i don’t want it to every small…if anyone has a pocket beagle please contact!

A: “Pocket” Beagles are the Designer Version of the real thing. Their small size is achieved by breeding runts to runts to runts. They are bred by Backyard Greeders and Puppy Mills out to make a buck off their extra small versions of a real breed. They’re no better than a Teacup .

Beagles come in 2 sizes – 13″ and 15″. If you want a smaller one, then go for a 13″, but stay away from someone selling “Pocket”, “Teacup” or “Micro” sized dogs.

Q: what are some health problems for pocket beagles?
other names for this type of dog is a minature beagle. they are not literally pocket-sized at the adult stage.
they are never pocket sized…they just aren’t the same sized a a full blood beagle.

A: The following conditions in red are deemed the most prevalent in the breed.

Alimentary (Digestive Tract), Behavioral, Cancer, Endocrine(Glands which produce various hormones), Hearing/Balance, Hemapoietic (blood related) & Lymphatic (Lymph Gland system), Heart & Vascular, Immune System, Integumentary (Skin), Liver-Pancreas, Neurologic (Nervous System), Occular (eye), Reproductive, Respiratory (Lungs and Brochical System), Skeletal & Urinary

Q: Does anyone know where to find Queen Elizabeth pocket beagles for sale?

A: Bassetnut nailed it.

Regardless of where you find one, it won’t be from a good breeder with healthy, sound dogs.

Look for a responsible breeder of 13″ Beagles, instead.

Q: Why do some people think that pocket beagles don’t exist?
Well, I bought a pocket beagle 3 years ago, and those so called “health” problems DO NOT EXIST. She is perfectly fine. Yes she might have gotten bit by a scorpion, but that was her own fault.
Here is a picture of her if you don’t believe me.

Sam and her Basset hound friend Chloe.

Some people who answer about pocket beagles don’t even know what they are talking about. They DON’T own them so they would know. I don’t know why someone would say something they don’t even know about.
Sorry meant Wouldn’t instead of would know.
My bad
FYI- yes they do.
And that is only half of my basset hound.
If you bred show dogs I think you would know its basset hound not bassett. She WAS NOT bred by as basset! That is her friend! not sibling. As you could tell if you weren’t totally brainless is that she doesn’t look like a basset hound!

And for the first answerer you could probably google them. ☺
THANK YOU harry potter ponies!
Finally someone who is intelligent enough!
The people who think they are flukes are MORONS!

and no I DID not get the runt!!
i went to the breeder and they were all the same size for you information!

A: Is she registered through a reputable registry as a Pocket Beagle? They are not a true registrable breed, just like teacup whatever. You can register them as a beagle, but not as a pocket beagle. You can get an extra-small puppy in every breed every once in a while, and some have extra health problems and some do not. The key word with registries is reputable. AKC and CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) are the ONLY reputable registries, every other registry will register a dog as long as you say it is purebred (true or not).

Also, normal sized beagles are supposed to be less than 20lbs and bassets are supposed to be around 60lbs. I think that she just looks like a slightly smaller beagle next to a normal sized basset.

Q: Are miniature beagles real and what about pocket beagles?
If they are real leave a comment and plz leave proof

A: Only know one “mini” beagle the rest of the litter died and the one that is still alove is costing her new family a fortune in vet bills. The good news is the foster keeps her and still sees her when they go to europe to see their daughter. In other words they have the funds to have rescued this genetically deficient baby.

Q: Where do you buy pocket beagles in Los Angeles?

A: Mine come free with my acid.

Q: Do Pocket Beagles out grow it?
Do you think my pocket beagle will ever out grow the affliction?
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2346/2196491892_05b2b66467.jpg?v=0
Reason I did that is because anyone can take a pic of a 3 week old puppy and call it a “pocket” or “teacup”. The buyer will not know the difference until it weighs 40 pounds.

A: That pocket beagle can outgrow it’s affliction at my house! ;)

Adorable baby Tom!!! ;)

Q: Are pocket beagles like regular beagles?
My labrador passed a way a few years ago and my dad said once our house is done we can get a dog. And my dad was thinking about a pocket beagle. And i was just wondering if pocket beagles are just like regular beagles but only smaller. Like do they have the same interests?

A: Please please tell you dad not to get a “pocket beagle”. This is just a marketing ploy by sleazy unethical dirtbag puppy mills and backyard breeders to get you to pay a lot more for a poorly bred, poorly socialized puppy. There are two sizes, 13″ and 15″. Neither fits in a pocket.

Here is a link where you learn more about the breed, and can find a reputable breeder of beagles in your area.

Q: Do miniature beagles/pocket beagles exist?
I recently asked a question on here and 2/3 answers said that miniature/pocket beagles don’t exist. After a small google search, I found multiple links to “miniature” or “pocket” beagles. Is this just a selling tool?
What sorts of things should I worry about if I do decide to buy the runt of the litter in hopes of it being smaller than a 13″ beagle? Are there health issues or personality issues (being nervous/anxious etc) I should be aware of?

A: It’s just a selling tool just like the *Teacup* crap. There are only 2 sizes of registrable Beagles, the 13″ and 15″. Go to AKC.org and tell me if you find a miniature or pocket Beagle listed. It’s NOT there.

Q: pocket beagles vs reg. beagles & lemon vs tricolor?
looking into getting a beagle. don’t know if pocket beagles would be a good choice for a family considering having babies soon. we really like the size of the pockets. are pocket beagles more prone to health problems vs. regular beagles? also, what’s better to have a tricolor or a lemon beagle? would really appreciate your health

A: My advice would be wait until after you have your babies.

Babies are a lot of time and love and after one you may find that you do not want a dog or simply do not have enough time for you.

Then if you decide to get a dog go to a shelter to determine a temperament that is compatible for your family.

“pocket beagles” really aren’t true beagles. There is no such thing. And yes they will have more health problems because no reputable breeder breeds “pocket beagle.”

Also if you get a beagle from a bad breeder it can have a bad temperament and possibly harm your child.

After you have children you will be better able to decide what kind of dog (if any) will fit into your lifestyle.

Q: Is a Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagle good with a children?
Are Queen Elizabeth Pocket Beagles easy to train?
the more information you can give me, the better!

A: Breed standards exist for a reason- and any of this “mutants” such as pockets, teacups, etc. are really runts being bred to runts. This is NOT healthy, and there can be many health issues with them.
Not to mention, these dogs are not being bred by responsible breeders. Health testing is not being done. If you want a small dog, please find one that is MEANT to be small. Going for a teacup, pocket, etc. will cause you nothing but heartache.

ADD: to Lillian’s- your logic is flawed. Since no “reputable” breeder would intentionally breed these dogs, and only reputable breeders do health testiing. Reputable breeders would never intentionally breed a dog that was OUT of the breed standard- simply for money’s sake.
