Q: American Bulldog?
I’ve been researching the American Bulldog breed and it seems like the breed has been getting pretty good reviews. Can anyone suggest anything about the breed, training, and temperment? I am also planning on taking training classes… whatever u can suggest!
A: I have two American Bulldogs. My female is a Scott and my male is a Johnson. Their appearance, energy level, and temperament are entirely different, which you will find is common as each individual dog is going to be different.
The scott is smaller, sometimes better suited for in-home living as she doesn’t knock things off the wall when she runs…lol. She is more energetic and tends to be a little more temperamental than the male.
My Johnson is really laid back. Nothing gets to him, all he wants to do is be loved on and play. He’s quite a bit larger (107 at almost 10 months) and doesn’t always realize his size.
The important thing is to observe the parents. It has amazed me how much my dogs have turned out like one or the other of their parents, even though they haven’t been raised the same.
You’ll never regret an American Bulldog.
Q: american bulldog…?
I might be getting a american bulldog. And I have a few questions.
Can american bulldogs be family dogs?
Do they get along with other dogs/cats if they are raised with them from a puppy?
How much should I exercize an american bulldog when they’re a puppy?
any other additional info I should have to know how to raise a american bulldog.
A: Well the first two questions are yes. The third one is that they have to be walked once to five times a day. The additional info. is they need a lot of obedience training. These dogs are huge and they can ac tally knock you over by its tail. That’s the big thing. Beside that there nothing huge that you need to know.
Q: American bulldog?
ok i just got a american bulldog and like as you know u have to get pitbulls registerd by the police are something like that. do u have to do that with american bulldogs? and do they have to where muzzles when being walked?
A: Where I live, we don’t have laws about Pits or Am Bullies. If there are laws about Pit Bulls, double check to see if it includes Am Bullies also. Make sure you read up about the breed and socializing/training is a must.
Enjoy your Bully, they are fun and loving dogs
Q: What is the difference between American Bulldog and American Pitbull?
Just want to know the difference between an American Bulldog and an American Pitbull. And if you have an American Bulldog do you have to worry about the same problems that you have with Pitbulls?
A: there’s no problem with pitbulls, the problem lies within the bad owners who treat their dogs badly and train their dogs to be aggressive. a pitbull can be just as aggressive as an other dog. I own 2 pitts and they are the sweetest dogs and i trust them around anyone, any age.

Q: My American Bulldog looks different from all the others?
My american Bulldog is 15months old and weight in at 80lbs. she is a very lazy dog. she big, and she eats plenty of food(30lbs a week) but her longer hair and ears just don’t look like the others. I have seen both of her parents and they look like all the others. but not my Mariah. she all white with a brindle spot on the left side of her face. and the back of her ears are brindle as well.
A: A picture would really help.
Q: How long should my american bulldog be fed puppy food?
I own a 1 year old american bulldog mix. She just turned a year old on Dec. 1st. Should she stay on puppy food or should she start adult food. She weighs 50.3 pounds and I think she is done growing. I was told that some dogs have to stay on puppy food for two years.
A: Dogs usually stop growing at the age of 2 BUT I would start the adult food. Puppy food should be fed for the first year as you have done and adult food there after until a senior. Puppy food is loaded with fat and protein to promote growth and weight gain. This is what the pup needs in the beginning but after that the food runs the risk of making him obese.
Q: How do I get my American Bulldog Puppy to stop chasing my cat?
I have an 8 week old female american bulldog puppy who loves my cat. She thinks its another puppy to play with. I do not want my puppy to think its ok to chase the cat. I have tried having her on a leash when the cat is walking around and she will do great but the second that leash is off, she runs for the cat and won’t listen. Any advice would be great!
A: I had to laugh when I read Kirsten’s answer. This really is so typical, especially of the American Bulldog. This past weekend, my 10 month male discovered my daughter’s cat while we were visiting. He’s usually pretty good about staying close by, but one look at the cat, his selective hearing clicked off and the chase was on. It was a playful chase, which was a relief to me, but the frustration of trying to catch him was still there.
My daughter has an 8 week old female that we just got for my granddaughter for her birthday. She’s had some of the same problems between the puppy and the cat that you are experiencing. I recommended the drag to her and she’s using the ah-ah method as well. For some reason, the ah-ah really gets the attention of the ABDs when it’s used with consistency. Even in this past weekend’s chase, it got me a look at least. She’s been using the method for a week now and it’s paying off. The puppy will leave the cat alone for at least a few minutes.
The key is consistency and timing. You have to catch the puppy at it’s first sign of interest in the cat. That first glance in the cat’s direction is crucial.
Enjoy your puppy. You’ll never regret your decision to share your life with an American Bulldog.
Q: How do I get my female american bulldog to gain her weight back after having puppies?
I have a Johnson American Bulldog that just recently had puppies and lost over 30 pounds in the process. I was wondering what I could be doing for her to gain her weight back quickly because I do not want her getting sick because of her weight loss. What should I do?
A: Thirty pounds sounds like a dangerous amount for a dog to lose during pregnancy/whelping, even for a larger dog like an American Bulldog. I would suggest a vet visit to make sure nothing is causing the weight loss.
Q: Any ideas how to help an American Bulldog with severe allergies and very itchy skin?
Our American Bulldog is allergic to almost every type of grass and pollen. We are having her treated by a dermatologist but now summer is on the way, her scratching has started again. She scratches so much she makes herself bleed. She drags her belly and chest along the grass or carpets and makes herself very sore. We have tried a number of things but nothing seems to work. Has anyone experience of this and any tried and tested remedies. Please try and help us…..
A: By adding an ounce of Electro-Colloidal Silver to the dogs water bowl on a daily basis should help tremendously with the allergies, It can also be applied directly to the skin and fur to prevent infections and accellerate the healing of itchy abrasions and contusions. Let it air-dry. You should be able to find some Electro-Colloidal Silver in your local health food store or at a discount directly from some manufacturers on the internet. Run a search. It is also not hard to make it yourself and save considerably more. The use of Electro-Colloidal Silver in the care of pets is a really worthwhile subject to look into.
Q: How do I get an American Bulldog to reduce his shedding?
We have an male american bulldog that literally sheds constantly. He’s a healthy dog but his owner (my roommate) buys him discount dog food. My roommate tells me that raw eggs or vegetable oil will help the shedding. I brushed him out the other day but he is still shedding all over the place. I’m sorry but I don’t want to vacuum everyday! I know about the furminator brush, and I think I will get one. Is there a dog food, or any other food, that will help the shedding? Please help!
A: Feeding a good quality food will help with the shedding. You can also supplement with fish oil. It’s really better than vegetable oil.
I’ve not used a furminator, but people swear by them.
And it *is* summer and hot weather. Dogs shed. It’s in their job description.
Q: Would an american bulldog pup be a good choice to raise to guard chickens?
We had a neighbor dog kill half my flock of chickens yesterday so we are looking into getting a dog to raise to protect them. I found an american bulldog pup but cant find any research on how they do with chickens. The regular breeds bred for chickens are pretty pricey and nobody within 1000 miles of me has any. Thanks!
A: No dog on the planet is “bred for chickens”,dear.
ANY sane & sound dawg, will alert to an intruder,of any species.
ANY/every dog will gleefully KILL as many chickens as it can….unless CONFINED & *extremely* firmly trained *not* to….& that includes “it’s” birds!
Raising livestock requires proper CONTAINMENT…that includes dumb birds.
Q: What is the difference between a American bulldog and a Pitbull?
What happend is people are always thinking that my American Bulldog is a Pitbull, I wonder why?
A: there is no such breed as the pit bull, often american staffordshire terriers, bull terriers, staffordshire bull terriers, and american bulldogs are all lumped together and called pit bulls
Q: IS a american bulldog considerd a pit bull to most home owners?
I want to adopt an american bulldog from a high kill shelter but my lease says I can not have any pit bulls so I just wanted to know if an american bull dog would be considerd a pit bull to most people ?
A: An American Bulldog is not a pit bull, but what your landlord might think is another thing. Part of the problem is that there are so many pits that are way outside the breed standard (not a breed recognized by the AKC, but it does have a breed standard), which means there is a large variation in how they can look. Normally, a pit would not be nearly the size of an ABD. Some people will take issue with anything that looks bully-ish. If your contract says not “pit bulls” and your adoption papers say American Bulldog, I think you are safe in arguing that they are not the same dog, but to be on the safe side, talk to your landlord.
Q: Any suggestions of what is wrong with my American Bulldog?
Yesterday, my American Bulldog woke up with bumps all over his body (I have never seen anything like it). He has not been exposed to any different allergens nor have we changed his food. He is a little over a year old. Any suggestion of what this could be? He’s disposition does not seem to be affected by the bumps.
The bumps are not colored and are soft to touch. Some are as big as a quarter.
We have an English Bulldog , too, and she has not been affected with this strange aliment.
A: I saw a vets dog sprout bumps all over her body. We went for lunch, came back and she looked like something bite her all over her body. They were huge bumps. Something was giving her an allergic reaction.
Not sure if the doctor found out what is was, but she administered a diphenhydramine hydrochloride (benedryl) injection right away.
You can give your dogs benedryl or the generic diphenhydramine hydrochloride capsule. Dosing is 2mg per pound every 8 hours. Also, call your vet and ask for suggestions. It could be a household allergy. New carpet? Carpet deodorizer? House hold spray of some sort? New laundry soap? Could be many, many things!
Good luck.
Q: What should I name my American bulldog puppy?
So me and my family have dicided to rescue/adopt a american bulldog, but we can’t think of a name. We can’t even agree if it should be a girl or a boy. The only names we like are
Hunny(girl)
Mouse(depends)
Gato(boy, LOL that means cat)
We are not absolutly sure if we will name it any of these we just need ideas and see if they will stick. Oh and I would perferably like Japanese names.
A: Ringo- Japanese for Apple.
Neko- Japanese for Cat.
Kawaii- Cute.
Kakkoii- Cool.
Tako- Octopus.
Kuika- I forget what it means, sorry. (:
Kirakira [or just Kira]- Sparkle
Those are a few Japanese words I remember from my visit many years back that I liked.
As for Spanish like “Gato,” I like these:
Caliente (Callie)- Hot
Milagro-Miracle.
Manzana [Mana]- Apple.
