BUt, the best bet is to give him up to GSD rescue. You won’t make any money off of him, but he will find a good home – and will be cared for for life.

And please, don’t get another pet until you can promise to care for it for life. Living paycheck to paycheck is not a time to get a pet – life changes too quickly when your life is in that mode.

Rather than reposting it in the dog section:
1) call all your local rescue groups
2) talk to your local vets
3) talk to your local pet stores
4) search at Petfinder and Dogster
5) if you want a pure-breed, visit the AKC website and the Husky and GSD breed groups for California. You can google search for those groups or find them via the AKC website.

Q: looking for a a german shepherd puppy for sale in massachusetts?
i cant afford a german shepherd puppy that is $1000 and up. i need one that is priced lower….my other german shep just passed away last year and my family was looking to buy another one but one that is low priced. we managed to buy two german sheps for the price of 500$ a long time ago soooo i was wondering if anyone could give me some names of kennels in massachusetts that have german shepherds for sale.

A: If you can’t afford $1000 for a well bred GSD, you need to look at rescues and adoption.

The reason well bred GSDs are over $1000 is because the breeder has invested a lot of time and money in breeding the dog. They have done things like OFA on hips and elbows, CERF on eyes, titled, etc.

GSDs are prone to hip dysplasia. It is hereditary. It is very important that any GSDs that are bred should have good hips. The only way to know this is to have their hips xrayed and rated by the OFA. Vets cannot just tell.

GSDs are also being seriously overbred. Many have poor temperments as a result.

It is very important to go to a responsible breeder who breeds for standard, health and temperment. Those selling their pups for $500 do not do this.

I couldn’t find any on my local classifieds. I live in San Antonio,TX but I am willing to drive out of town if you know of someone that’s selling any. Or where can I look on the web to find them?

A: It is normally easier to look on the web first, but it really is best to go and visit the breeders, make sure the dogs are friendly, check out ALL the health certificates, you can get a list of required tests by goggling it, ask what activities they do with their dogs, look at the conformation of the dogs, but make sure the parents look good, and their backs are not too sloping. Look through the contract and see if they give guarantees.
I have provided some links below, it is best to find someone who is part of an association, so read all the clubs requirements (do they check out the kennels who can anyone join?), but sometimes you get some great dogs from small kennels. always check out how far back the breeding history goes in generations, after spending a few weeks reading all the websites and looking at the history, you will get a good feeling about some of the dogs and their history, so it is best to start there. A: Stillwater, Ok? I would suggest looking in your local newspapers for ads. Ask a local vet if she/he knows of any german shepherds in your area. Also make sure its a respectable dog breeder, there are many “back yard” breeders that contribute more dog health issues and do more bad then good. In my area, shepherds are around 200 maybe even less. Sometimes i have seen them priced for 300! Also try a german shepherd rescue center. They may have reg. akc shepherds that need a good home. Sometimes breeders have asellout and have thier dogs priced pretty reasonable. Here is a website that might be further help to you.

A: This is not the place to look for a healthy GSD puppy from a reputable breeder. Responsible breeders do not reply to offers like yours – they already have a waiting list for pups. You need to make sure you are buying one from a breeder who has had the parents hip scored, elbow graded and the sire tested clear of haemophilia B and have a good temperament as a priority before breeding.
Contact some of the many GSD breed clubs who can put you in touch with reputable breeders – but they won’t negotiate over price, you either pay what they are asking or go elsewhere! You will get cheaper unregistered pups but they won’t have proper health screening & may well end up costing you more in vet’s bills.
