Q: German Shepherds?
I am going to get my sister a german shepherd and have it trained to help her because she is in a wheelchair. She is leaving for college this fall and she is going to a pretty big school. I thought this would be good for her. I don’t know much about dogs but I hear german shepherds are really good for these types of things. Could someone give me more info?
A: You should contact the organizations that train service dogs (after asking your sister if she would want one). The people that train these dogs know how to pick the dogs that will perform best in this role (german shephards are great but not EVERY german shephard is made to be a service dog).
Q: German shepherds??
I have a couple questions on German Shepherds.
-Would they make good outside dogs?
-Do they really shed A TON and how do you reduce some of its shedding?
-How much exercise is needed?
-plz tell me more and how it’s like owning one….
A: Okay you know German shepherds r great dogs to have<3
Okay:
- they r good outside dogs! Really good! Just you got to train them, so that they don’t make a big mess! And you have to socialize them as puppies! Because if not they will become to overprotective and they will bark a lot!
- They shed a lot! But you can’t really reduce it! Just a good daily brush will probably fix it! and thats all u have to do.
- they need a lot of exercise! A long walk or a long run will help them! And make sure they don’t pull you… they have to learn to walk at your pace!
-They are just great dogs to have you just have to train them and feed them.. Also give them a time cycle with their food!
I have a German and we would always feed him at 6 in the morning, but then we got into vacation and he was to used to it, so he would bang on the windows and wake us up and the destroy the yard, so best if you feed him at a time where you are always free!
Q: german shepherds?
i am buying a german shepherd which is going to be 7 weeks old. where and how should they sleep…meaning… is it best to keep them in a cage in the night?
A: Here are two websites about crate training:
http://www.cuhumane.org/topics/crate.html
http://www.wonderpuppy.net/canwehelp/1crate.php
The good thing about putting a puppy in a crate during the night is that it won’t go to the bathroom because dogs don’t relieve themselves where they sleep. This makes it easier to potty train. But you have to make sure that the crate is not big enough to allow the puppy a place to sleep and another place to use as a toilet.
Good Luck, hope this helps!
Q: how many german shepherds would you have living in your house?
how many german shepherds would you have living with you,and your children…..
Do you believe in outside dogs??????? that live out side in the yard or the garden?
A: none, they don’t speak English, we have no sheep, and I detest Germans Why go on about Kraut sheep minders when this is the gardenig section. Begone to you Barbara Woodhouse pages
Q: Why are German Shepherds the most common dog found in a shelter?
I’ve been told that German shepherds are the most common dog to be found in a shelter. There are always german shepherds in a shelter, why?
Thank You!
A: Not true in my shelter. It’s pit bulls that are most common. Poor things.
Q: What is the difference between german and american bloodlines in German Shepherds?
I’m looking at German Shepherds, researching them, and I was wondering if people could tell me more about the german and american lines.
I already know a lot about GSDs.
A: German lines are bred more for strong bone structure and working ability, The dogs are larger and stronger. They have more of a natural protective instinct and willingness to work.
American/Canadian lines are bred more for apperance, showing, and slanted backs, they make better family pets because they arent as intense as the German lines.
Q: Are german shepherds barking behaviour proof of their closeness to wolves?
I’ve noticed german shepherds seem to howl like wolves in comparison to say, jack russel dogs. Discuss.
A: dude. all dogs bark, they just have different ways of doing it. hunting hounds such as beagles do that too. it’s not really a wolf thing.
Q: Whats the difference between German Shepherds and Alsatians?
Is there even a difference between German Shepherds and Alsatians?? It’s been bugging me for ages. And how do you spell Alsatian? cos google corrects it as Alsation. And which is nicer?? Please help!
A: Same breed, different name. During WWII it was not PC to have a “German” Shepherd so the breed was renamed after a Provence in France – Alsance which is close to Germany, but yet, not German. Hence the name Alsatian – from Alsance.
Q: Where can I find breeders for German shepherds in the northern Virginia area?
My husband and I are looking for breeders of german shepherds in the VA/MD?DC area for a dog that is going to be a family pet.
A: go to petfinders.com…..this is a site for rescue groups…..just enter your Zip code, and be AMAZED at how many great choices you have !!……i adopted a Great Pyrenees mix from them, and my dog Sylvester is awesome !!…..check it out…..try it…..do a good deed…..adopt a German Shepherd today !!…..good luck to you, in your search for a German Shepherd as a new pet !!!!
Q: How can I start building my backyard lawn with 2 German shepherds running around in the yard?
I would like to know which brand of turf seed I should use in a 50ft by 50ft area trafficked by two German shepherds. This area has some unwanted weed that I need to get rid of.
A: put sod in
Q: What are the blue marks on the tongues of some German Shepherds?
I’m not an expert on German Shepherds, although I’ve had a few in our family through the years. (three of them were mixes) But I’ve seen some German Shepherds with a blue mark on their tongues. Is this the marking of a purebred? And is it a natural occurrence, or a tattoo?
(btw) My GSD mix does not have these markings on his tongue.
A: It really means nothing as long as it’s a spot and not a huge blotch, lol. My pup’s sire has a blue spot.

Q: What happens when you cross 2 white german shepherds?
I am NOT, I repeat NOT going to breed them, In fact, I’m planning on neutering him.. I’m just curious because they are always crossed with black and tan or black german shepherds..
A: [truly yours]: Go STUDY that genetics manual. What you describe can’t happen – but the opposite can. It’s the same as with hair. One of my grandmothers was a blonde. Her children were all brunettes, thanks to Granddad. But one of their daughters produced “carrot tops” to her Irish husband, the other daughter’s son produced a blonde to a bride who was a brunette but as a baby had “moulted” through blonde & red-head.
And self-white mating pairs can produce ONLY self-white progeny.
No, [Ashley], if both parents are self-whites the grandparents are irrelevant to the litter’s coat-colour. Because both pairs of alleles needed for the absence of hair-pigment (without also de-pigmenting the skin the way the Spotting series’ recessive alleles do) are recessives, grandparents become important only to indicate whether non-white parents are carriers.
[Jordan] has it backwards. The 2 pairs of recessives aren’t FOR white; they are for BLOCKING pigment. The e^ e^ pairing that blocks eumelanin (dark pigment) is very efficient. The other pairing, that blocks phaeomelanin (tan pigment), is less efficient, often allowing “badger patches”. The hairs on a white dog or person are not actually white, they are transparent, allowing all areas of the spectrum to be reflected and refracted. To prove it, place some “white” hairs side-by-side on a printed page and examine under a strong light & magnifier – the print colours will be seen THROUGH those hairs
[lee]:
You get bitten in 2 places at once? It’s not a good idea to “cross” a GSD, let alone TWO of them at once! VBG
Assuming that your “german shepherd” mispunctuation & abbreviation actually means members of the German Shepherd Dog breed, you get either no pups, or every pup a self-white GSD.
It is MIGHTY rare for a fancier of white GSDs to cross to a non-white GSD.
For a white GSD to be re-registered as a Berger Blanc Suisse by the Swiss KC, it must have ONLY registered-as-white GSDs in the closest 6 generations. I don’t know what other FCI members are doing, but in Australia and Germany no white GSD can be registered as a GSD, and nor can it be registered as a BBS there or in NZ even if it arrives with The KC(UK) or CKC or AKC registration showing 6 generations of only-whites. Note: The official KCs of those last 3 nations are not members of the FCI, so won’t recognise the BBS – but they cheerfully register as GSDs the off-colours, weak characters, etc etc.
But when a white GSD IS mated to a non-white, there will be no white pups UNLESS the non-white parent is a carrier, in which case you get about 1 in 4 pups being a self-white. But you will have VERY indifferent quality in such litters, as no-one with a Breed Surveyed GSD will allow an unsurveyable pooch to be mated to it. And pooches that CAN’T pass a Breed Survey are unworthy of the proud designation “GSD”.
However, all such pups will be carriers for both types of recessive allele. AND are almost certain to possess various undesirable genes that cause black loss or colour-paling (because fanciers of white collect them to reduce the effect of “badger patches”), so that either their black area reduces to almost nothing by 2½ years old, or the tan fades to palest cream/fawn, or both happen.

Q: Do german shepherds like to stay outside or inside?
I was wondering if german shepherds would be more of an outside dog or an indoor dog. I might get one in the summer, would it be ok for it to sleep outside in the summer and spring. Also I live in Washington, and it doesn’t get that hot or cold here. Any advice? And when I bring it inside, will there be hair everywhere? Do you think brushing will help reduce some shedding?
A: I have a German Shepherd and he is an outside dog.
I think if you get one you can have it both inside and outside!
The advice i give you is take good care of it of coarse!
But if you want to reduce so much shedding give it baths, and brush its hair, and take it to get haircuts. And always brush it, because their fur can get really tangled!
But you can have it outside any time you want! And inside any time you want. I have my dog out in the yard, even if it is raining.
1 thing though when it is still young, which is still 1 years old. If it is raining or really cold then you must bring them inside!
But when it is older it can stay outside.
My dog just has a nice cozy house and when it is a little too cold we have a nice little jacket for him!

Q: How are German Shepherds with cats?
I am thinking of adopting a German Shepherd. I have 2 cats and wondered if this breed generally get along with cats. I’ve had German Shepherds before but have never had cats at the same time.
Do you think a 5month old would be ok?
A: Any dog will get along with cats if it is raised with them. IT may not like other cats but it will be fine with one from your house. And 5 months is a good age i don’t see you having a problem other than your cat taking a bit of time to get use to it.
BEAR. what the hell are you waffling about, i have had “pure bred” GSD all my life i have 3 now and my old man breeds them, and not once have any of them attacked the family cat, so where do you get your info from that they will not get on with cats, because you are wrong mate. They will do if brought up with them. Sounds like another daft myth that misinformed owners believe.
