Q: What is it like to have a golden retriever and a collie breed of dog as a pet?
Can you tell me what it’s like to have a golden retriever dog and a collie dog as a pet? Can they live with cats rabbits or birds.
how about fish? can they live with a fish. can all those animals live together in peace

A: Technically, any dog should be able to get along well with other animals if they are raised with them, but the labradors are more likely to coexist than the collie is.
They both have a fairly strong prey drive, but the collie combines that prey drive with a herding instinct. A herding instinct undeveloped will often lead to an attacking instinct when it comes to encountering smaller animals.

Q: Have you got any ideas of tricks that I can teach my Golden Retriever dog?
I have a 1 year old golden retriever dog that is extremely clever. He picks up tricks really easily. I have taught him to roll over, crawl, speak on comand, shake, high five, wave, lay, drop, sit, and stay.

I want to teach him to do something really spectacular that will not hurt his joints. Has anyone got any more ideas of what I can teach him?? Im running out of ideas.

A: Try teaching him to poop in the toilet? ;)

Q: My golden retriever dog has lumps on her nose? What is it?
My 10 month Golden Retriever has two lumps on each side of her nose where her whiskers are. One is slightly bigger than the other. It’s not pink or anything, it’s as if it’s inside her skin. She’s acting normal to it but I’m worried at what might happen, I hope it’s not cancerous or anything. Also is it contagious? Because I have another 15 month dog of the same breed.
EDIT: The lumps are about the size of 5 peas (not five different lumps, but that’s how much peas it would cover)

A: I highly doubt it could be any sort of contagious illness. Usually anything with significant lumps has to do with a tumor and cancer or some other sort of chronic illness, rather than contagious.

Are the lumps very big? If they’re smaller than a pea, and if they seem to cause your dog no pain, I really wouldn’t worry about it. Your golden retriever is young and healthy, she is probably fine.

Q: how to take care of a golden retriever dog?
the guidelines, tips and pointers, the do’s and don’t s of taking care of a golden retriever dog…

A: Golden’s aren’t that different from any other dogs in terms of taking care of them. If you’re getting one, my best advice to you is to research, research, research! Seriously, it will turn out better in the end.

The basics are this-

Goldens are high maintenance for grooming, so brush daily with a slicker brush and undercoat rake. Bathe how often you like, though at least once a month is necessary. I bathe once a week, definitely not necessary, but it subdues the “dog” smell a little. Also nail clipping is necessary, just whenever you think they get too long. Also, you’ll need to clean his teeth and ears.

Pick out a good dog food, do some research and pick the best one that fits into your budget. Don’t get stuff like Beneful or Iams, if you research they are horrible! I personally recommend Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy, but it’s a little pricey. Feed him as your vet recommends.

Goldens need exercise, so walk and play with him a lot.

Try not to give table scraps, they are not nutritionally balanced and your dog will beg. Research and find out the bad foods you can’t give to your dogs, i.e. onions, grapes, chocolate, etc.

Make sure you’re house is puppy-proofed. Research on that and make sure there’s nothing dangerous in your house and yard.

I recommend baby gates to keep your puppy confined to an area if he’s not housetrained or is not trained and will chew up your furniture.

Other than that, make sure you have all the supplies, don’t leave him in his crate(you have that, right?) for more than his age in months in hours(2 months=2 hours,3 months=3 hours…) and no longer than 6 hours at any age.

Beware that if he’s a puppy, he’ll be mischievous and he’ll chew.

Just read up. Buy or borrow some books on goldens and dogs in general. I recommend Golden Retrievers for Dummies, and Dog Training for Dummies. Also there are some good articles online.

Hope this helped. Good luck!

Q: how to train a 1 month old golden retriever dog?
how do you train a 1 month old golden retriever dog? i need help.. :) thanks!

A: I so hope you are trolling because that is not only illegal but immoral.
You have an unsocialized dog, who doesn’t know how to eat and barely has a grasp of the world.
GO TAKE IT BACK!

Q: What would be better for my dog golden retriever?
I am getting a golden retriever soon girl puppy but i wanted two so if I had to leave they would be fine should I get 2 females or 1 female 1 male? And I have had dogs before and helped out with dog walking so lots of experience! And should I get a golden retriever or a labrador? Both so cute!
I also volenteered at spca.
should i get them at different times? so one is 8 months and the other is 2?

A: I have two dogs one is 9 years, had her since she was 9 weeks old. The other was a rescue 3 years ago, he is 5 now. Having two is a lot more work and they can undo the others good behavior as much as they can teach good behavior.

I have a male rescue because none of the females I introduced to my older dog got along with her.

I believe dog walking to be a very important activity even if you have a large yard for them. Walking two dogs can be tricky, it took a while for me to get it right. Remember you are not walking SPCA’s dogs, these will live with you.

I could go on about the social gaps in dogs that have been kenneled a long time. The 8 month old worries me because by that time social development may be fixed and hard to correct. The 2 year old will also be fixed as far as social development but is at a calmer age.

Perhaps the tie breaker is to take home the least adoptable dog, figuring that someone else will take the other dog. Larger, darker dogs are always hardest to place.

Q: Will a Tortishell cat and a Golden retriever dog get along with each other?
Hi. Well I have a Tortishell Cat and I am thinking about getting a Golden Retriever will they get along even if brought together as a puppy and an adult?

A: This does not depend on breed, it depends on the character of the animals concerned.
If one has lived with you a long time it may resent any other animal intruding. There is a pecking order with animals and you as human adult should be top dog, then it goes down the line to your kids (if you have any) then to the animal so if you introduce another one it will generally have to be a little subservient to the one you have already living with you. (Well that is the way it is supposed to work?)

Q: Why did my parents golden retriever dog’s back legs get big?
My parents have an 11 year old golden retriever. His two back legs got real fat and swollen after bringing him back from a kennel. He’s been to the vet and on medication for it but it’s not getting better. To throw something else in the mix, they inherited a 1 year old boxer who is very playful. It seems like the golden retriever has a broken heart because he won’t get up when you call him anymore yet when he’s up he seems to be okay. What are your thoughts on this? How to cope?

A: It sounds very much like inflammation to me. As one poster has suggested, it could be through lying on concrete for long periods when he was in the Kennel. If he is suffering from arthritis, which is very likely at his age, then this has undobtedly exacerbated the situation.

I don’t think he is suffering from a broken heart, it’s just that he is in pain and is actually unable to get up as easily now.

Try and not let the younger dog annoy him. He may feel he wants to play but as he is in pain he cannot do so at the moment and he would be better separated from the other dog until the inflammation in his joints subsides and he is able to get around more easily.

Has your Vet prescribed anti-inflammatories for him? This is what he needs. You say he is on medication but do you know what it is for? You might ask your Vet exactly what he is treating him for.

Try and keep him warm, perhaps even get him a heat pad to put in his bed to lie on. This would help him and would probably ease his stiffness.

I do hope he recovers well. Good luck with him.

Q: Feeding golden retriever dog peanut butter ?
Feeding golden retriever dog peanut butter ? Is it ok?

A: In small amounts it’s fine. One of my Golden’s is allergic to it so I’d be careful and see if your dog has any reaction to it. Mine got a rash all around his mouth.

Just make sure it a small amount then watch for any type of allergic reaction. If there’s none then your Golden is fine with it. ok

Q: How can I get a cheap golden retriever dog?
I live in Los Angeles and I’m trying to buy a pet dog. Somebody knows any kind of infro.

A: Even if you get a dog free, count on over $1200 a year in maintenance. No dog is cheap.

Q: Does someone know an easie way to train a golden retriever dog?
I want to learn how to train my 2 month old dog because she has become part of this family but she is too too playfull and I would like her to listen I have only had her for 3weeks and I do not know much about dogs. Can someone help me out? I just want some hints like what kind of snacks she should eat and what can make her happy etc. As you can see it’s my first time having a pet.

A: UGH! people who dont know the breed should stick to grooming!

Golden are exceptionally intelligent. All they need is someone to be pacient and to not expect things to happen over night. I used Cherrios to traing the little ones. It doesnt have to something special. Just as long it doesnt upset their stomachs. Do a 10 minute training a few times a day then play time. Only give a treat when you get the correct responce you want. It take a feqw days to teach each new command. Start off with the easy ones like sit. give paw then once that is leaned then move on to sit, stay! Make a list and then when the pup has learned each new command then mix them up to keep the pup interested. Just remember that the pups attention span is not the greatest! So dont get frustrated too easily ok.

Also look into puppy classes too. They are not only fun but the both of you learn so much!
Have a great time with your golden pup!

Q: we have a 22month old golden retriever dog who has stopped eating?
he does not seen to have stomach problems he will eat food out of hand but not out his bowl which he has almays used. He seems well and plays as normal with other dogs he walks with.
His food has not been changed. The vet said dont leave his food bowl down, we are following his advice but l have posted this because others may have had similar experiences with their dog.

A: try mixing a little wet food with his dry food for a bit to get him use to eating out of a bowl…it seems he may not know how to eat out of one or it might be to small of bowl…not sure what it could be going on.
