Q: Are Golden Retriever dogs to big for apartments?
My parents are thinking of getting me a dog and I want to know if Golden Retriever dogs are too big for apartments.

A: It is not fair to have any dog in an apartment. A dog should have access to a garden and be able to go out whenever it wants to. Perhaps you are on the ground floor and have a fenced garden/yard.

If you are not on the ground floor and you do not have a garden imagine the problems. Your dog will need to be walked regardless of the weather, it may need to have the mud washed off its coat and then dried. Can you carry a dirty dog up stairs or take it in the lift? Have you somewhere to wash it in your apartment/flat

Can you carry it downstairs to a FENCED GARDEN for its last pees and poos before you go to bed? Then what do you do when it wants a pee in the middle of the night? Is it safe for you to take it out during the night? Will you mind going out in your nightwear?

When your dog wakes up in the morning, it will not cross it legs until you get dressed. Will you again take it downstairs for a pee? In all of this consider the fact that if you are not at home during the day to potty/housetrain your dog it will pee and poo on the carpets.

Have you ever heard a dog cry when it is left alone? If you are at work you will be unaware of this, have you considered the other tenants or your dog? They will almost certainly complain, then what. Eventually you may be asked to vacate your apartment/flat and make good the damage before you leave. Have you considered how many landlords will take you and a dog?

Dogs are dumped every day because their owners cannot find accommodation. Dogs are not toys or stuffed animals that you can cuddle when you are lonely.
IF YOU LIVE IN A RENTED APARTMENT/FLAT AND YOU INTEND TO LEAVE A DOG ALONE, THINK AGAIN.

Q: How are yellow lab/golden retriever mix dogs as pets?
I’m thinking about getting this yellow lab/golden retriever mix, but my mom isn’t fully convinced yet. The one I want is 3 years old and 88 pounds. She is worried about his size. He is good on a leash and is good with cats and dogs and small children. He is obedience and house trained. She is worried about money, and his size. What do you guys think? Also, how are lab/golden mixes as pets?

A: Considering the fact that this dog already has obedience and is house trained it is an excellent choice. As a professional dog trainer I have trained many of these breeds and find them to be awesome family dogs.

As far as cost and size go, you may have to feed a bit more than a small dog, but you’ll find if you buy a quality dog food, which you should for any size dog the amount of food you feed is not excessive. For instance a dog that size would most likely need 1.5 to 2 cups twice a day.
Here is an article on pet food with suggestions to add some real food you already eat which can also keep your dog food costs down: http://www.dogtrainingsandiego.com/2010/05/dog-food-same-cheeseburger-everyday/

Vet costs: Really the cost for treatment of a large dog versus a small dog is the same.

I would consider temperament and training as the key factor in deciding to get this dog. Sounds as though this dog has a thumbs up on both. I would recommend this dog as a good choice.

Q: more info on German shepherds and golden retriever dogs?

and will my golden retriever stop growing since she had a litter.(don’t worry they all went to good forever homes)i made sure.

A: Wonderful info on the websites and community forum at http://www.germanshepherdworld.net/

I highly recommend you check it out!

Q: What do golden retriever dogs do when they are mad?

A: They won’t look at you and they become very standoffish…

Q: How much exercise do golden retriever dogs need each day?
And any other info on their behaviour and temperament. Thanks

A: a beautiful dog used by the blind as guide dogs so very intelligent when they grow up but can be very destructive need at least 1hr a day off the lead running loose

Q: How old do German shepherd or Golden retriever dogs live to be?

A: That is a really good question. With both breeds it depends on their lines. Some lines in either breed only 8-10 and then there are other lines in both that are 12-14+. If you are thinking about getting either breed, ask the breeder how old some of the relatives are.

Q: What are better dogs: Golden retriever or Border collie?
I want a smart cute family dog.
Which would be better?

A: It really depends what you’re looking for in a dog. They both need a good amount of exercise daily, and probably shed a lot. Golden Retrievers and Border Collies are intelligent dogs, and do not enjoy being left alone. If you want a “smart cute family dog” both the Golden Retriever and Border Collie would be good choices.

Q: My Golden Retriever dogs wants to have puppies….. How many do you think I should take and sell?
I ‘ve got this really big backyard… But I can’t just really decide…. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The puppies turned out to be 8…

A: Ok. No dog WANTS to have puppies. They breed because it’s an instinct. Dogs are NOT humans and do NOT need to breed. Do your dogs a favor and have them spayed or neutered. Breeding dogs is not something just anyone should do. There are risks and MAJOR expenses involved. Are you prepared to pay $3000-$4000 in vet bills should your dog have any complications in labor and need a c-section?
Not to mention you will need to pay vet bills to have both your dogs tested for genetic issues before breeding, that is if you want to do it right and have healthy puppies.

Q: What are some foods that humans eat that are very good for big dogs (golden retriever)?
could you make a liist of them please

A: If you’re asking in reference to feeding your dog entirely on “human foods” (as in your previous question) then the simple answer is raw meat.

Learning to feed raw is not something that can be summed up in a list of foods. Please look at the links I posted in your previous question and research this extensively before ditching the kibble.

Deciding to feed raw is not something to do flippantly. If you feed a nutritionally lacking diet, you could cause serious and permanent injury to your dog. It also requires quite a bit of time and effort especially when first starting.

Q: Why doesnt my golden retriever like other dogs?
my golden retriever hated when friends of ours brought there dog to visit.we thought he didnt like the dog being on our property and got over it.recently we tried to take him to a park and wheever he saw a dog he went crazy and tried to get to it to attack it.WHY??????

A: Dogs are like children, they are not born with all the info they need to get along in life. Classes are only to help those who have a pet with a problem. Professionals have the answers to your question, since your not a professional at dog handling, and by the way, neither am I, we seek out thier help, and they have so many needing help, they hold classes to assist many pet owners who would like to enhance their experience with their pet!! Your other questions, people do understand what you are asking, you dont like the answer. You are NOT a failure as a pet owner and love, on the contrary, you love your pet so much your trying to find out how to train your pet, to get along with other animals.
The fastest way to accomplish that, is to go to dog classes, or read about pet obidience online, you can find lots of free info in class, if that isnt quite enough, then a class will help you and your pet ok!!
Dont get so upset, the question is quite clear, and the answers you were given, are too.

Q: why is my golden retriever starting to attack other dogs?
At first my golden retriever was very nice to other dogs and always wanted to play with them. But after a while he started to attack them. Every time he sees another dog all of his hair on his back stands up and he starts to bark. He runs and tries to bite the other dogs. And he has before. The thing is that the other dogs give him no reason to do this? Why is he doing this and is there a way to stop him?

A: Dominence is the main cause. If the dog is young it is usually playing but you need to keep the dog in contact with other dogs to socialize..Dogs are very territorial and protective especially if on your own property. If the problem continues go to classes to learn behavior modification..Any dog can turn on people or other animals for no reasons but generally if a dog is fixed he or she will calm down more so then a un fixed one.

Q: golden retriever?
is it really normal for dog to bark when they are hungry and thirsty and it is really normal to puppies for 2 months old are hard to teach tricks like golden retriever dog and last at how many times can i bath my gloden retriever

A: If you have a good feeding routine normally a dog is happy to wait until the corect time but usually when it is getting near to dinner time a dog will certainly let you know that they are hungry. They seem to have a built in clock. Mine start pacing up and down about ten minutes before their meal time as if to say “Come on, get my food, I’m hungry”.

As for water, no dog should ever have to ask for water if it is thirsty. Water should be made available to them at all times.

You can teach an 8 week old puppy the basic commands like “Sit” when you give them a treat and “Come” when you call them, again offering them a treat, but at the moment I think this is all I would do in the way of training or teaching tricks.

Start by taking the puppy to training school when it is 3 months old, after it has had all its shots, and once it has started to respond to your commands then try teaching it some tricks if you want to.

Goldens are very quick to learn and are always eager to please so you shouldn’t have any trouble in teaching it tricks.
They love to fetch things so that is a good one to start with.

I wouldn’t bathe your Golden too much. Every 6 months is plenty. You don’t want to strip all the oils from the coat and this can happen with frequent bathing. When you do bathe your dog use a good dog shampoo, e.g. Oil of Evening Primrose, plus a conditioner and this will keep the coat soft and shiny.

If the dog gets dirty in between shampoos you can just gently hose them off with warm water and dry them with a towel then give them a good brush when they are dry.

Q: I have 2 dogs-a golden retriever and a chihuahua. Is there a food they both can eat?
They are both 1 year old. Is there a food I can feed both of them? I think it’s rediculous to buy all these different kinds of dog foods if they’re just going to eat whichever one they want.

A: I would opt to buy a raw dog food brand called K9 Healthy Performance (www.K9HP.com). I myself have a smaller dog, a toy poodle and a medium size dog who is a pit bull. My boyfriend’s dogs are also on this food which consist of a pug, pit bull, and bull mastiff. The food is healthy and all natural.

Q: Golden Retriever:……..?
Okay, I’m doing a project on my favorite breed of dogs: Golden Retrievers. I want a catchy title, not just Golden Retriever. So far, I though of using something along the lines of Golden Retrievers: The Friendliest/ Most Obedient/ Most Loyal/ Etc Dog. What do you think? Also, if you have a better title, just tell me it thanks.

A: When I was in fourth grade, I did a report on golden retrievers, and called it ‘My Golden Report’.
