Q: What is your experience with male Shih Tzu dogs and temperament?
I am contemplating purchasing a Shih Tzu puppy. I have had experience with a female pup, but have been told that male Shih Tzus are more reserved and less interactive. I am looking for individuals that have male Shih Tzus. Are they all calmer/more shy than the girls? Or is it just a case of observing certain dogs? I would like to get a boy (I already have a male dog, different breed, and would like to keep things simple) but I also want a dog that will be playful and fun with my four children. Any help in this decision would be appreciated.

A: My male Shih-tzu is more outgoing than my female Shih-tzu, I think it just depends on the pups personality. Both of mine love people though and love to play and cuddle.

Q: Are shih tzu dogs good with children?
I have a 9 year old daughter and a shih tzu dog. She is kinda mean to her and she snaps at her when she tries to pick her up. I have had her for 4 days. I got her for my daughter if she’s not able to play with her I am thinking about getting another breed of dog. Someone please help me as I am trying to learn about the dog. Someone told me shih tzu’s do not like children, is this true?

A: Reseach and fine a calm breed. I had a shih tzu that was the love of my life. Her temperment was outstanding. Homework.
Peace…

Q: what should i feed shih tzu dogs and are they only inside dogs?
we just got a 6 week old shih tzu pup wanted an outside dog not shore if this breed is.

A: Shih Tzu is the WRONG breed, for an outdoor dog. You should look into bigger breeds, and without long coats that require a lot of grooming.

Good ideas are:
Rottweilers, German Shepherd, Boxer, etc.

In all truth, all dogs should be indoors, despite their breed. Outside should be supervised.

Q: Does Shih tzu dogs make good pets with children?
When your children are all ages 8,9,10,11. Is it good to adopt a dog called a Shih tzu ?

A: Yes! They are awesome! My neighbour has one and breeds it. There are tons of kids on the street and the dog loves them! Plus they don’t shed! Less clean up for you…

Q: How does one introduce a kitten into a house that has 2 adult shih-tzu mix dogs?
I had cats years ago and now have two shih-tzu mix dogs. I am just weighing my options at this time because I still love cats and I’m wondering if it’s possible.
I had cats years ago and have not had cats since I got these dogs. One dog is Shih-Tzu Poodle and the other Shih-Tzu Cocker Spaniel mix. I find that I am now thinking of getting a cat but want to know would it be safe for that kitten to be with my dogs or vice versa.

A: Keep them separated by a partition or pet divider. Let them sniff her through the fence. Pet the kitty and talk to it in front of them. Be patient and introduce them slowly. Maybe even give them something with the kitty’s smell in their bedding.

Q: How do I know what ther colors are for Shih-Tzu dogs?
On the papers to register my puppies list many colors and I don’t know what each one is.

A: Go to the AKC.org website and choose the right colors.

Q: How far can Shih Tzu dogs walk with you on clear, cool days?
Mine doesn’t walk much outside, or if she does, she tries to come in soon. So I’m wondering if I went on a mile or so walk over terrain other than our property, would she like it, dislike it, be harmed?

A: As long as your dog isn’t overweight or extremely out of shape, going for a mile walk should be fine. You may want to start with a shorter walk though so that if she gets too tired you can bring her back home. I’d start with about a 20 minute walk. She may enjoy the different atmosphere. You will have to see if she like it or not, but either way, it is healthy for her to go for daily walks to keep her fit.

Good luck!

Q: Do male Shih Tzu dogs still mark their teritory by peeing after being spayed?
Hi. I haven’t gotten a dog yet. Just curious to know if male dogs still maintain that trait after being spayed. Cos if I were to get a male, I’m hoping that I will not have to worry about this issue. Hope you can help. Thanks

A: Males aren’t Spayed, they are Neutered.

Marking indoors is a training thing done on your part.

Q: What can shih-tzu dogs get red eyes from?
My dog named Lizzie goes outside and when she comes back in, her eyes are red and seems like they are popping out of the corners. I think that it could be from the dead fish we have out in our backyard. I don’t know. Can someone please help me?

A: Its either a condition called “cherry eye” or it is caused from the hair being cut around the eye too short and then letting it grow back a little too long. The hair will grow back and the sharp edged of the hair will rub and poke the eyes. If you think it is cherry eye then here is the link too a good website for it.

Q: Why do my 2 female Shih Tzu dogs pee in my house side by side? One will pee and then the other will pee. ?
Are they competing for territory or dominance? There are always two puddle side by side. I also have 2 males. All 4 of them are spayed and neutered.

A: Watch this video about territory marking by Victoria Stilwell this should help you solve the issue! Sorry about the 2 parts! That is how I could find it on youtube!!

Q: what is everyones opinion of shih tzu dogs?
i want a loveable, nice dog. i dont want it to bark alot and i cant have a dog that sheds much. do these dogs bite or attack furniture or anything?

A: Shih Tzu temperate is a good as they don’t bark by nature. BUT….Dog are still dog .Some dog had behaviour problem, they may BARK, if you got your puppy from unknown resources like pup mills.

Shih Tzu had been gifts for empress of china .And they are very loyal animal. They basically know who empress enemy is and tend to bark at officials who she doesn’t like.
Female Shih Tzu is quieter than to male Shih Tzu as male Shih Tzu can guard the house. But they are not good guard dogs as they are small in size and they tend to be friendly.

Shih Tzu need allot of grooming. You had to come its fur and brush his undercoat.

Any dog will attack. If you buy a dog, make sure u know it parents.
Do the parents exhibit behavior problems?
Do the parents have inherited diseases like kidney stones?
Mostly dog will have bite and attack when they are not trained properly.

SO BASICALLY, it is your responsibilities to train the dog when it is young and set all the rules.

At teething period, all dogs will chew on things. So U should buy chewing toys for the lovely dogs.
BUT SHIH TZU WAS WONDERFUL DOG which walk very proudly…

And u can dress them up as they are long hair breed.

And they are very cheeky, great to have around kids and family.
U will find like a little lion dog (Chinese New Year, u see lion dance) they look like a Shih Tzu. See them dance and walk around u.
BUT at the end of the day, u wants an easy dog.
Don’t bark.
Dun sheds
Dun bite
Dun attack furniture
It is our responsibilities to love the dog and train him up a good way…
Else get an IDOG robot…

Q: What are Shih Tzu dogs like to keep as pets?
what are shih tzu’s like to keep as pets and (or) other small breeds like them like shih poo’s

A: COAT
The long-haired coat is accepted in any colour, including beige, black, and red, often with white.

CARE REQUIRED
A Shih Tzu requires a lot of grooming. Comb the coat thoroughly every day to prevent tangles. A hair band is essential to keep the hair out of the eyes. Because the eyes are a sensitive spot for these dogs, you need to make sure they are kept clean. Use the special eye drops prepared for this purpose. Clean the ear passages regularly too. If you do not have the time to keep the coat in good condition, you will need to take the dog about every two months to be clipped, which will spare the dog a lot of misery.

CHARACTER
These are intelligent, lovable, affectionate, cheerful, and sociable dogs that are also independent and not friends to all. The Shih Tzu rarely barks.

TRAINING
If you approach this somewhat obstinate breed with plenty of patience and remain consistent at all times, it is possible to achieve a reasonable level of training.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Dogs of this breed usually get on well with other household animals and children. No matter what company they keep, they always behave with dignity.

EXERCISE
The Shih Tzu is content with short walks, their exercise requirements are not large, they were bred to sit around the emporer’s palace in China and bark when people or animals approached, not to chase game!

GENERAL
The Shih Tzu coat looks best when groomed daily, but if you are wanting a pet rather than show animal you may keep their fur clipped so less grooming is required. They do not tolerate the cold, so don;t clip them unless in a warm climate, and coat must long for show animals.

Q: Can dogs with stubbed noses be flown internationally? For example a Shih Tzu?
My husband is in the Air Force and is thinking he may be getting oversea’s order’s soon. We have a little Shih Tzu dog, that we love to death. He’s like our child. I have heard before that all the airlines refuse to fly pets with stubbed noses. (because of breathing concerns) But we couldnt bare to leave him behind, not for years. Is this actually true? And if so, does anyone know about how to go about shipping a pet by boat then?

A: i doubt that this is true. only SOME airlines accept animals/dogs. you should ask someone from that airline to see if they accept dogs. some places lets you have your dog under the passenger seat in a kennel (if its small enough. and obviously a shih tzu is…hopefully).
if you are going international, you need to get your dog microchipped (the airlines make the processing and whatever stuff faster cause they can just search for the chip and look at the medical stuff.. so its faster and easier ) and get a rabies shot … and maybe some other shots. i dont remember. it also depends on where youre going to go also(i think) you can talk to your vet about this. make sure your dog has a legitimate I.D. on the collar with the name and address and etc.
you just need the right airline and ask them the right questions.

Q: How do you stop a fixed female shih tzu dog from humping other dogs?

A: hahha aww. its normal. my pomeranian does it and she’s been fixed since she was 6months and she’s now two, the funniest is when she humps our cat. But if your dog is REALLY bad then consult a professional for advice, or even try having one session with a obedience school and they can teach you exactly what you need to know to prevent it if its very frequent. good luck

Q: my shih tzu dogs are itching and biting their legs and heads. They have had allergy shots and it didn’t help?
Is there anything that I can put on them that will help?

A: could it be fleas?
